Search-Driven Software Development

The increasing amount of publicly available software on a variety of open source hosting sites recently triggered an increased research interest in search-driven software development. This manifests in a number of source code and component search engines, such as Merobase, Krugle or Google Codesearch, as well as in the fledgling growth of an academic research community (cf. e.g. SUITE) dealing with challenges related to searching and retrieving (reusable) software artifacts.

Software search certainly not only includes searching for source code and components, but searching for web services as well. The surprising shutdown of the public UDDI business repository in early 2006 has made clear how important it is to transfer the findings of component retrieval to web service retrieval and to learn from the experience gained in the former area.
